Concrete ceilings are becoming increasingly popular in multi-story construction, apartment blocks, repurposed warehouses, factories, and residential houses. They bring unique robustness and thermal mass to spaces that lean more towards industrial or contemporary aesthetics. Below we go into a bit of detail into how they are formed and some tricks that are used to achieve shape and texture. For those that want an industrial-chic ceiling, this may just be the solution.
1. The different types of concrete ceilings
There are various types of concrete ceilings. In buildings that have multiple stories, and the exposed concrete ceiling is most common. It’s usually the underside of a concrete slab which forms both the floor and the ceiling. If the lower side of this slab is not plastered or covered with paint or timber, it becomes an exposed concrete ceiling. For one-story buildings, concrete ceilings can be the exposed roof construction.
Depending on what is required for a given project, concrete slabs can be premade then transported to the site (pre-cast) or poured on-site (site-cast). They are formed using moulds that are removed once the concrete has hardened and taken the desired shape. Moulds come in different shapes and sizes and if you have any specific design that you would like to have for your build, we can also custom-make moulds for you.
2. The benefits of concrete ceilings
Concrete ceilings have thermal properties. They have a thermal mass that allows them to absorb and store heat. Concrete has a high thermal mass which means it takes a long time to heat up and it takes a long time to cool down. In cool weather, the ceiling can absorb heat and store it. When temperatures drop, the ceiling will then release all the stored heat. This means that you can have a regulated temperature in your home.
Another benefit of having a concrete ceiling is that the pipes and fixtures for water, lighting, and mechanics are already incorporated on the concrete before it is laid. When the ceiling is put up, all these are concealed inside the concrete which gives a great finish to the ceiling. Alternatively, if you prefer a more industrial look with exposed ducts, pipes, and wiring, this can be accommodated too. Indeed, concrete ceilings are very versatile
